"How far is it to the manor?" quoth Ben in blistered desperation.
"I don't like your manner of speaking. Where are your manners? I'm Man-er than you are," said Hugh in a burst of unjustified inspiration.
Ben aimed a long cold glare at Hugh's wavering eyes, inducing a kilometre of silence.
"I don't know," said Hugh a kilometre later, after unsuccessfully attempting to decipher the Melways.
"But," he added, "we are going in the right direction."
"Great," said Ben with repressed aggression.
By this time the peopled country towns had made way for a barren, seemingly endless road girt by equally endless corn-fields. Hugh scanned the cloudless sky for an aggressive bi-plane while Ben kept his eyes firmly on the road ahead.
