Ben Hansen
"Who said that?" Ben asked, glancing furtively about.
"Narrative context," Hugh muttered.
"I see. Anyways, time for bed, Chalkie."
"I hate you."
The next morning, our intrepid adventurers woke up and considered their options.
"So if we keep the briefcase, we break the law and possibly get caught
and sent to jail, but if we give it away, we end up with bugger-all
money," Hugh rationalised.
"That's about the size of it, yeah." Ben sipped his cocoa, tasting
paranoidly for any hints of chalk.
"So maybe what we should do is not give it back for a while."
"I like it! Let's wait till we find the other guy's briefcase and
learn what the couple do during their time apart."
"Wait that long?" Hugh enquired.
"Well, if we get $300 a day, we want to wait a couple of days, plus if
we wait until all these cases are solved we get a nice clean break all
at once."
"Point made."
"So, I'll follow the lady, you follow the guy, and we'll both keep an
eye out for the briefcase."
"Okay, just so long as you don't find it in another bloody dumpster."
"But if I find somebody else's briefcase that's okay?"
"All right, but keep in mind that we already have several cases going
at once and anything else we do might," Hugh paused for breath and
suspense, "Make this job profitable."
"And we don't want that?"
"Narrative context, Ben."
"I see."
