Hugh Hamilton
Hugh cleared a view through the leaves and was shocked to discover that the guard, whose idle ferocity put gargoyles to shame, was much more intimidating up close. He was even more shocked to discover his mobile suddenly spring to life from his pocket, making his cunning hiding spot redundant. The guard immediately reached into the bushes and pulled out Hugh with admiringly precise violence, then threw him to the ground at his feet. Hugh quickly covered his eyes in the vein hope that the "if I can't see him, he can't see me" theory was not just an annoying joke thrown around by bureaucrats at cheap sushi luncheons.
"What are you doing here!?" growled the guard angrily.
Hugh removed his hands from his face and calmly rose to his feet.
"I was hoping I could poke around Nelson's house," replied Hugh despite himself.
"A severe beating needs more persuading."
Hugh caught the hint gracefully and revealed crisps bills to the sum of 25 dollars, part of a bundle of cash he found under his couch before going to Nelson's.
The guard scratched his head contemplatively then greedily snatched the notes and stuffed them in his pocket. He smiled at Hugh then made a swooping gesture towards the house. Hugh thanked him and went inside as the guard ran off into the street.
'Someone's left here in a hurry,' thought Hugh as he noticed the unflattering condition the house was in. This was good for him; it meant that someone didn't have enough time to clean up, leaving evidence everywhere. He rubbed his hands eagerly and began his search.
