The Ming Poodle: Chapter LXII

Hugh Hamilton

"This may upset Buttes" said Hugh with calm malice.
"Yes" agreed Ben, "finding her husband and the poodle burnt to ash can't be good for our case either"
"Although..." began Hugh.
"Yeah, yeah" interrupted Ben, "do your cremation joke"
"...Uh," said Hugh guiltily.
They stood there in silence for a moment.
"Does this mean our case is over?" asked Ben.
"No!" Hugh roared triumphantly. "We must find Craper's killer!"
"Why?"
"Why?!... Because it just occurred to me that whoever killed him might have the Ming Poodle. Surely they wouldn't have let it burn in the train."
"That's true!" said Ben. "Any suspects?"
"Why yes: I have reason to believe it was the train's doctor."
"The train's doctor? Why?"
"Because I suspect he lied about Craper's time of death so he could have an air-tight alibi. The problem was everyone else had an air-tight alibi at the time of death as well. It would also explain why he burnt the body, as then a further examination of it would be prevented."
"You scare me."
"I try."
"Hugh," said Ben, "that guy running away in the distance holding a bag with a Ming Poodle shaped lump in it—"
"Yes?"
"Could he be the doctor?"
"Yes," said Hugh sadly.
"Let's go," urged Ben.
"Wait, should we take Tom?" said Hugh pointing towards the Tom shaped mess sitting placidly near by.
